Lindsay & Brian Are Engaged!

Oh, y’all! Fall has arrived! Nothing is sweeter to my soul than stepping outside and feeling the change in season, all the way down to my toes. Everything is different, lending a happy change in perspective and a refreshing change of pace.

This time of year, when I’m photographing, my eyes are opened in a whole new way. I can almost inhabit the beauty of the season through my camera. The light slants differently and somehow seems more golden than ever before. The color tones are soft like watercolor. I look at the back of my camera while shooting and, be still my heart!

Lindsay and Brian are just as sweet, golden, and vibrant as their surroundings. I loved getting to spend such an inspiring afternoon with them. Lindsay has been a ballet dancer all her life, and since I’m secretly obsessed with ballet, I couldn’t help but start off with this shot…

Happy Thanksgiving + Giveaway Winner!

Happy Thanksgiving friends! I hope you’re all cozy at home with your families today, and I hope your hearts are full. To me, today isn’t just about parades and turkey and football. It’s a day dedicated to what matters most. Today is a call to action–whether you are young or old, single or married, surrounded by your kids or just your dog–today is a call to celebrate more and love deeply and hug tighter. No matter how this year has been so far, this is your chance to start. Today is about celebrating the things that matter most in life.

So, here are a few things that I’m most thankful for today: • Spending time with my parents who introduced me to the love of God at a young age • Holding my twin baby nephews • A ring on my finger telling the world that I’m loved by one incredible man • A hot cup of coffee • Cuddles from our puppy, Steve • The smell of Thanksgiving pies baking & Christmas-y candles • The truth of who Jesus says I am in Him • The feeling of possibility that this season brings • Christmas music • Gold glitter nail polish • The crisp weather outside • Boot season! • My hometown, and all the sweet memories I have here • My husband’s hugs and sense of humor • The peace that comes from making the harder but wiser decision • Photography and the blessing it’s been on my life •

I hosted a giveaway last week, in honor of my five year anniversary in business, and I’m so excited to announce the winner TODAY! With the holidays upon us, I can’t imagine anything better to give away than an Instax Mini, to document all the sweet and special moments during the winter months. To me, there’s just nothing like printed photos, and instant gratification is EVEN BETTER! :) Who won? See below! :) :)

Congratulations Liana! Email me {caroline@carolinejoy.com} with your mailing address and I’ll slip your Instax Mini in the mail first thing next week. (And friends, you should seriously check her out on Instagram–adorable!)

I’m sending a big ol’ hug to everyone else who participated. Your support and encouragement mean more than you know. So many of you left incredibly kind messages for me, and I love that I’ve even made some new friends through this fun little experience. Thank you so very much, and…

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Thanksgiving is officially upon us! I’m so looking forward to everything this week holds: a road trip with my husband, family time and getting lots of play time with my adorable twin nephews, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, our not-so-traditional day-before-Thanksgiving dinner of fajitas (my dad started this tradition), and the official start to Christmas time! After this week, I won’t have to feel guilty when listening to Christmas music. :)

Things will be quiet around the blog this week–EXCEPT for Thanksgiving day, when I’ll announce the winner for the Instax Mini giveaway! You still have time to enter if you haven’t yet! All you have to do to win the Instax Mini is (1) Follow me on Instagram @caroline_joy (2) Give me (and the giveaway) a shout out on your Instagram feed. Easy as pie. Make sure to check back here on Thanksgiving to see if you won!

In the mean time, I wanted to share a few images from a session last week. I had the honor of photographing this precious little family on Friday, and all I can say is, bringing your dog along for your session = SO AWESOME in my book. I just love pups and the joy they bring to photos!

Film vs. Digital // Part 2: Cost Comparison

Disclaimer: The title of this series is a bit misleading. To me, it’s not a competition of which is better, but simply an exploration of the quality/cost/experience of shooting film vs digital. The conclusions are based on my personal opinions, preferences, and taste. As my awesome friend Chad Zellner commented, “Any avenue of creativity is a good one.” See Part 1: Introduction here.

Welcome to part 2! We’re getting into the thick of it. No hiding now–we’re talking cost today, and I think you’ll find the conclusions interesting. None of the prices below include added costs, such as tax or shipping. Here are some estimates on the cost of shooting film vs the cost of shooting digital:

COST OF CAMERA & LENS  //  For simplicity’s sake, I’m generalizing two groups. Level 1 represents lower priced cameras that are used professionally but aren’t as high end as level 2. Level 2 represents higher priced cameras that are considered creme

de la creme by most. The two film cameras listed are not in production anymore, so they must be purchased used.

Level 1

FILM: Used Mamiya 645 Pro TL + 80mm // $789.00

DIGITAL: Canon 7D + 50mm 1.4 // $1,898.00

Level 2

FILM: Used Contax 645 + Carl Zeiss 80mm // $2,100.00

DIGITAL: Canon 5D mkiii + 50mm 1.2 // $5,118.00

CONCLUSION: Purchasing a digital camera + lens will cost you a little more than twice as much as a film camera + lens. Film wins.

COST TO SHOOT // We’re just talking about actually capturing pictures here. We’ll get to post processing in a moment.

FILM: Roll of Fuji 400H 120mm film ($4.99 per roll–16 shots) = $0.31 per photo.

DIGITAL: SanDisk 16gig CF card ($49.99). The 16gig CF card holds about 692 photos (when shooting medium sized RAW files or “MRAW” on the Canon 5d mkiii). However, the CF card can be reformatted and reused many times, meaning you can shoot thousands of images for a one time purchase of $49.00.

CONCLUSION: The most important thing to realize is film is a reoccurring expense. It’s hard to compare the two down to the penny, since CF cards can purchased once, then be reused. But let’s just limit the number of images to around 700, and leave out the fact that CF cards can be reused. Digital cost to shoot 700 images: $49.99 (for CF card). Film cost to shoot 700 images: $217.00 (remember, it’s $0.31 per image). Even leaving out the fact that CF cards can be reused, digital is still much less expensive to shoot than film. Digital wins.

COST TO EDIT // This is tricky to compare, because processing film is a reoccurring cost, whereas processing digital can be a one time cost if you edit yourself, or a reoccurring cost if you outsource. Again

, I’m using products/services that are personal favorites for the comparison.

FILM: Processing and scanning at Richard Photo Lab = $26.50 per roll (16 shots). To develop 700 shots (what you might develop for one wedding) would cost $1,162.

DIGITAL, DIY: Lightroom 4 ($149) + VSCO actions ($119) = $268. You’d have an upfront cost of $268 to purchase your processing software, but once you purchase it, you have it for a long time. You can edit tens of thousands of images with that one time purchase. Let’s pretend that in 3 years you edit 63,000 images–an estimate if you shot 30 weddings each year for 3 years, at 700 images per wedding. Your cost to process one image would be $0.004 per image.

DIGITAL, OUTSOURCED:

  • FotoFafa: $0.25 per image x 700 images = $175 per 700 images
  • Richard Photo Lab Digital Services: $0.50 per image x 700 images = $350 per 700 images

CONCLUSION: Digital DIY processing is by far the most economical.

But even still, outsourcing your digital processing to the high end Richard Photo Lab costs about a third of the cost of processing film. Digital wins.
OVERALL CONCLUSIONS: Whew! If you stuck with me all the way to the end, you deserve a gold star! There are so many different avenues and options–it’s a bit messy to try and compare all methods equally. I think we all started this journey suspecting film was pricier than digital. My hope was to give some real life comparisons and numbers. While film equipment is about half the price of digital, film shooting & processing ends up being considerably more expensive than digital shooting & processing. If you’re planning on making a switch to film, make sure you’re in a place where your business is financially able, and make sure that your prices reflect the switch. Plan your switch to film with care, or else you may put unneeded financial stress on your business.

Five Year Anniversary Celebration // Instax Mini Giveaway!

Woohoo! The celebrations are still going strong! (I’m celebrating this fun milestone with giveaways and behind-the-business posts, from now through Christmas.) Last week, I partnered with Ma Joie Press to give away an AMAZING custom letterpress wedding invitation suite. I’m BEYOND excited about this week’s giveaway! Check it out:

I’m just dying over this giveaway! Why? Because the holidays are upon us, and it’s time to make some sweet memories, y’all! It’s amazing how much joy this little camera brings. Take it along with you to any gathering or party, and you’re instantly having a BLAST with your friends, waiting for the photos to appear and laughing at how silly you can be. I.LOVE.IT. I’ve also discovered that an Instax Mini makes a great guest book for your home. Keep it on your entry table, snap photos of friends when they visit, and tuck the prints into a mirror frame for a casual display. In this digital age, physical photos are a rare delight. You can make so many holiday gifts with an Instax Mini, too. I’ve been seeing adorable little albums popping up for sale everywhere. Oh, and imagine making all your Christmas gift tags out of Instax Mini prints! I’m getting excited just thinking up new ideas! :)

It’s settled. We all want one. So here’s how you enter. This is an Instagram contest. Follow these two steps to complete your entry:

  1. Follow me on Instagram: @caroline_joy
  2. Give me (and this contest) a shout out on Instagram

Simple as that! The winner will be announced on Thanksgiving, right here on the blog.

Happy Tuesday! :)

Celebrating 5 Years // LETTERPRESS INVITATION SUITE GIVEAWAY

Yup. That’s right. 5 years!

I started photographing weddings in December 2007. Between now and Christmas, I’m doing a series of giveaways and behind-the-business posts, to celebrate!

I’ve been reflecting so much over the past few days about how I got started and how I got to where I am currently. All I know is…making one decision + working with consistency and passion + challenging yourself to do better than yesterday…that’s what works. Running a successful business isn’t easy. It’s hard work and smart work all at the same time. But it’s oh so rewarding. And worth every moment of struggle, every moment of doubt, every moment of learning the hard lesson. Because for every one of those moments there’s a moment of breakthrough, of empowerment, of growth.

What inspired me to start?

I wanted to make a contribution to the beauty in the world. I literally wanted to add more good. Photographing love made sense to me. Photographing nuance and detail made sense to me. I wanted to do my part to highlight it–the beauty, subtleties, and complexities of love and commitment and sacrifice.

Since then, lots of other things have shaped and refined my cause: I’ve grown in my belief and convictions–there is responsibility and honor behind serving people well. I’ve added a different vein of passion–teaching others how to chase their dream and run a successful creative business. I’ve experienced personal growth–learning a work-life balance, finding freedom from fear and insecurity, and sticking true to my voice and style.

But the core reason I do this, is for the very same reason I started: I want to make my contribution to the beauty of the world. We all have a contribution, a gift, to share with the world. Choosing to pick up your passion and DO SOMETHING with it is the best contribution you can make.

GIVEAWAY!

I’m excited to start our little giveaway series with an amazing offer from Ma Joie Press, a letterpress boutique in Dallas, TX. She’s giving away a custom letterpress invitation suite to one lucky bride getting married in 2013! Sarah & Michael Are Married! // Part 1

Sarah & Michael. Wow. I don’t even really know where to begin with these two amazing people. For me, there is just nothing better than capturing the wedding day of two people who are so obviously meant for each other. It makes my heart sing–it’s exactly why I do what I do. There was such a peace, such a sense of trust and comfort, that ran just beneath all the excitement and celebration of Sarah & Michael’s day. I remember a quiet moment in their ceremony, between taking photos, and I just became aware that I was witnessing something absolutely sacred. Way later that night, after we packed up our equipment and were driving away, I felt a renewed sense of love and admiration for my own hubby. It’s pretty special someone else’s wedding can do that for you. :)

Sarah & Michael were married at The Hermitage (the home of Andrew Jackson!) in Nashville, TN. Sarah is such a creative spirit, and she chose to wear a floral hair wreath, rather than a traditional veil. I love the sense of whimsy it introduces into their wedding day. I’ve actually known Sarah since high school–her mom was my choir director, and was super influential in my life during my high school years. Words can’t express how fun it was to see their family again and be a part of Sarah & Michael’s wedding!

Their ceremony and reception are coming next, in part two of this sweet wedding!

November Goals

Happy November!  I’ll spare you my exclamations on how last month zoomed by and how I can’t believe it’s basically the holidays already. November is going to be one sweet month. I have lots of fun goals, BUT my #1 goal is simply to keep calm and stay healthy. :) This is my busiest wedding month EVER. Add to that the holidays, and well, it’s a recipe for stress. However, my mind often comes up with brilliant quotes and my latest gem is, “Stress Is A Choice.”  So I’m doing all kinds of proactive things like eating plenty of raw fruits and veggies, limiting sugar, taking probiotics and astragalus, and repeating my brilliant quote to myself anytime I feel overwhelmed. :)

Here are the rest of my goals:

-Vote!

-Commemorate the day the builders break ground on our house! The date is still unknown but it should be in November–cross your fingers. We plan on celebrating by toasting champagne at our home site. And maybe dancing Gangnam Style. Wait, no. On second thought, maybe not. We kind of want to be on our Home Owners Association board, so we should probably play it cool.

Oh, get real, you know we’re SO going to dance. :) :) :)

-Order Christmas & New Years cards…this year, no photos, just pretty designs from Rifle Paper. Love them!

-Order all final Christmas presents. I’ve never finished my shopping so early! YAY!

-Decorate the tree with my handsome hubby. It’ll be our second and last Christmas in “our first place” rental, so it’ll be sweet and memorable. :)

-12 in 12: Read Believing God by Beth Moore. Honestly, I love the holidays, but what I really love most is slowing down enough to savor the truth of the season and letting my heart be shaped and reshaped by my Savior’s love. I want to immerse myself in the spirit of the season. Knowing WHO WE ARE in Jesus frees us up to love others and give generously. I want that. Aaron and I talk all the time about how we want our lives to be marked by generosity and love. So I’m saying NO to “too busy” and YES to spending time with Jesus and accepting his TRUTH about who I am in Him. This is what I want more than anything this holiday season.
