HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Campy as it may be, I wholeheartedly embrace New Years. A sense of new beginning is POWERFUL and I sincerely want everyone to get as excited about it as I do. I’m currently reading Well Being by Tom Rath, and within the first three paragraphs of the book, I had a new perspective on New Years goal setting.
Tom says, “We are quick to buy into programs that promise to help us make money, lose weight, or strengthen our relationships. Then we spend the next few weeks dedicating our time and energy to that specific plan. Eventually, we give up on these programs when they conflict with other aspects of our lives. You may notice how an intense focus on one area can actually be detrimental to your overall well being. It might seem easier to treat the critical areas in our lives (career, social, financial, physical, and community) as if they are independent and unrelated, but they’re not. They are interdependent.”
I’m setting all my goals with this perspective this year. Harmony between all areas of my life.
Before I jump right in to my goals for January, I want to give you a little of my heart on the subject. I’m only setting seven goals a month. The purpose of these goals is not to chart daily to-dos, but to take steps toward lasting change. That phrase makes me breathe deep. :) I set my goals by thinking, “Who do I want to be at the end of 2012? What habits do I want to have formed? How do I want to be closer to my ideal self?” and go from there.
So…
January Goals:
- Prepare heart, mind, and body for Branches & Light (happening on January 30th!)
- Celebrate ONE YEAR of being with Aaron (And three months of being married!)
- Read Well Being by Tom Rath (I’m taking on the 12 in 12 challenge–reading 12 books in 12 months)
- Buy a gem of a car with cash and pay off a student loan in full (All from selling our 4runner — WORTH IT!)
- Continue to blog 3 times a week
- Commit to beginning each day with a few minutes of yoga
- Package and send pretty vendor boxes to venues around Austin
Next month I’ll share which goals I completed, and share my February goals. By putting this out there, I’m hoping you’ll hold me accountable to actually do this. This is me asking for support. :) And if you want to blog your monthly goals, share them with me and I’ll come hold you accountable! :)

These are awesome goals! I will definitely be joining in!
Great perspective, Caroline. Thank you for sharing! I’ll be keeping this in mind.
These are fantastic! I’m starting to think in terms of monthly goals, myself. Much better than resolutions, in my opinion :)
Great post, Caroline! I set mine with pretty much the same parameters. Didn’t think about doing monthly goals, but that’s a great idea! Check out my blog from yesterday! :) http://ellabrooke.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/2012-goals-dreams-aspirations/
Oh my goodness gracious you are adorable !! Love those pics of you :) Being a huge goal setter myself, I found this post super helpful. Thanks for the tips and I have to pick up that book!
I still have’t “found” my monthly goals, but his is a great idea… just like you said “be accountable for ourselves!” So it is really helpful to have this as a “helper” to help me find my on! Thank for this and for sharing your thoughts!
